Palestra de Pedro Ferreira: “Proteger pessoas, não direitos”

Resumo da palestra: The relation between rights and just peace is a means-end relation. This means that rights serve an instrumental function in the attempt to establish peace through justice. Because of their instrumentality, there are no philosophical or moral reasons why rights cannot be freely – although not arbitrarily – abrogated, so long as every human being’s life, liberty and dignity, which, together, form the core of justice, is protected. Whether such protection is achieved through rights or any other mechanisms is, however, irrelevant, and therefore the focus of discussions on this subject should not be centred on the protection of rights, but on the protection of the human person.
