Abstract:

My investigations claim the importance for the Philosophy of Science of the Husserlian thesis exemplarily exposed in the Crisis, namely: the replacement of the pre-scientifically intuitive Nature by the idealized Nature precisely begins with Galileo and proceeds to a violent continuous process of gradually more extreme “symbolic” formalizations, in a way that a mathematical reality happens to exist as a substruction of the primary intuitive reality. As an aftermath, the technicization of nature takes places and its emptying of meaning, which are closely related to the algebraization of Geometry and the expansion of the application possibilities of the algebraic methods both in mathematics and in the already idealized nature. As part of our efforts to clarify the process of algebraization, I will base on Burt C. Hopkins’ The Origin of the Logic of Symbolic: Edmund Husserl and Jakob Klein, from which I take: a) the issue of the great relevance of Phenomenology as a backward investigation of the history of the mathematized Science, due to which the Epistemology is granted with historical tasks and in which the very concept of History embodies an essential and a priori signification; b) the problem of the confrontation and of the incompleteness of Klein’s and Husserl’s investigations concerning the origins of the formalization of algebra in Viète; and c) the problem of the real possibility of a historical-intentional investigation of the origin of modern algebra.

 

Abstract in Portuguese:

Minhas investigações reivindicam a importância para a filosofia das ciências da tese husserliana exposta exemplarmente na Krisis, a saber: a substituição da natureza pré-cientificamente intuível pela natureza idealizada começa precisamente com Galileu e segue em um violento processo contínuo de formalizações “simbólicas” cada vez mais extremas, de modo que uma realidade matemática passa a existir como substrução da realidade primária intuível. Como consequência dessa substrução dá-se a tecnicização da ciência e seu consequente esvaziamento de sentido, que estão relacionados mais diretamente com a algebrização da geometria e a ampliação das possibilidades de aplicação dos métodos algébricos tanto na matemática quanto na natureza já idealizada. Como parte dos nossos esforços de esclarecer o processo de algebrização, empreendemos uma leitura de parte da obra The Origin of the Logic of Symbolic Mathematics: Edmund Husserl and Jacob Klein de autoria de Burt C. Hopkins, de onde retiramos: a) a questão da grande pertinência da fenomenologia como investigação retrospectiva da história da ciência matematizada, posto que a epistemologia ganha tarefas históricas e onde o próprio conceito de história assume uma significação essencial e aprioristica; b) o problema da confrontação e incompletude das investigações de Klein e Husserl a respeito das origens da formalização algébrica em Viéte, e d) o problema da real possibilidade de uma investigação histórico-intencional da origem da álgebra moderna.
