It should be sensitive to subject matters and conceptual limitations, but this stands in the way of a natural algebra: even non-distributive or non-modular lattices won\u2019t do. Besides, a cognitively adequate individuation of content may be intransitive due to \u2018dead parrot\u2019 series (yeah the Monty Python are involved!): sequences\u00a0\u03c61, &#8230;,\u00a0\u03c6n where adjacent\u00a0\u03c6i,\u03c6j are cognitive synonyms for one while\u00a0\u03c61 and\u00a0\u03c6n are not. But finding an intransitive account is hard: Fregean equipollence won\u2019t do and an impossibility result by Leitgeb shows that it wouldn\u2019t satisfy a minimal compositionality principle.\u00a0<em>Sed contra<\/em>, there are reasons for transitivity, too (from substitutivity\u00a0<em>salva veritate<\/em>, non-mononotonicity, and uniformity principles). In spite of this mess, we come up with a formal semantics capturing this whole jumble of desiderata, thereby giving evidence that the notion is coherent.
